Shirou Emiya
A boy who dreams of saving everyone, wielding the power of swords to protect his ideals.
Shirou Emiya (Japanese: 衛宮 士郎, Hepburn: Emiya Shirō), also written as "Shiro Emiya" in Fate/unlimited codes, is a fictional character and the main protagonist of the 2004 eroge visual novel Fate/stay night, published by Type-Moon. Shirou is a teenager who accidentally participates in the "Holy Grail War" alongside six other mages looking for the eponymous treasure, an all-powerful, wish-granting relic. Shirou was the sole survivor of a fire in a city and was saved by a man named Kiritsugu Emiya who inspired him to become a hero and avoid killing people during fights. While fighting alongside the servant Saber, Shirou develops his own magical skills and, depending on the player's choices; he forms relationships with the novel's other characters.

Lore & Background
Writer Kinoko Nasu created Shirou and Saber in stories he had written as a teenager. Nasu originally imagined Shirou Emiya as a female character named Ayaka Sajyou (沙条綾香) who wore glasses and Saber as male. Nasu swapped their sexes due to his experience writing the novel Tsukihime and because Type-Moon believed a male protagonist would better fit the target demographic. Shirou's role in the story was meant to highlight parts of his personality and growth based on the paths the player picks. The first Fate storyline shows his slanted mind; the next, Unlimited Blade Works, presents his resolve, and in the last storyline, Heaven's Feel, he becomes Sakura Matou's ally and abandons his life-long passion of becoming a hero. By the end of the making of the visual novel, Nasu described Shirou as a joyless hero disinterested in the war, denying himself personal happiness in order to save as many people as possible.
In Their Own Story
The rain in Fuyuki City always tasted like ash to Shirou, a phantom memory of the night that changed everything. Standing amidst the ruins of an old building, he watched the glowing red eyes of his Servant reflect in a puddle. He tightened his grip on the wooden sword at his hip, feeling the weight of every life he had promised to save. 'I don't care about the cost,' he whispered to the storm, his voice steady despite the trembling in his hands. 'If I can be the one who catches them before they fall, then that is enough.' The fire in his chest burned brighter than any magical flame.
Reader's Guide
Shirou Emiya serves as the emotional core of the story, representing the struggle between idealism and reality. His arc revolves around refining his definition of a 'Hero of Justice' through the brutal trials of the Holy Grail War. His primary skill is Projection, allowing him to replicate weapons he has seen, particularly swords, by analyzing their structure. While these copies lack the original's full enchantments or durability, they are sufficient for combat and can be reinforced with his own magical energy. Defining moments include his initial summoning of Saber, his confrontation with his father's legacy, and the ultimate choice he makes regarding his ideals in different narrative paths.
Did You Know?
- Shirou was originally conceived as a female character named Ayaka Sajyou (沙条綾香) who wore glasses, with Saber as male, before artist Takashi Takeuchi suggested swapping their sexes to fit the game market.
- Shirou's character theme is titled "Emiya", and remixes and other themes were created to focus on important scenes related to his character.
- Artist Takashi Takeuchi has trouble bringing out Shirou's expressions because of his unique eyebrows, making Shirou the most difficult Fate/stay night character for him to draw.
- In the spin-off manga Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya 3rei!!, Shirou uses a magical card that dresses him in Archer's clothes; author Hiroshi Hiroyama originally drew him half-naked but felt this was ridiculous since the events take place in winter.
- Shirou is regularly voiced in Japanese by Noriaki Sugiyama as a teenager and Junko Noda as a child.
