The entity known as Avenger (Angra Mainyu) was incarnated into the world when the Grail was corrupted during the Third Holy Grail War, not summoned as a Servant in the Fifth War. In Fate/stay night, Avenger does form a formal Master contract with Kirei Kotomine in the Heaven's Feel route—Kirei is explicitly Avenger's Master, while also being the Master of Gilgamesh. The Grail itself is not a vessel binding Avenger; rather, Avenger is the corruption that defines the Grail's twisted nature. This creates a unique tragedy where the 'hero' summoned to fight for victory is actually the jailer of the very apocalypse they are meant to prevent, trapped in a cycle of hatred that defines their existence.

In practice, this artifact does not require a traditional Master in the conventional sense; it is often controlled by those who seek to break the system or by the Servant bound to its corruption.
