Historically, the Matou were originally the Makiri family, founded by Makiri Zolgen (who later renamed himself Zouken Matou). They were one of the three founding families of the Holy Grail War alongside the Tohsaka and Einzbern (not Emiya). Their talent for magecraft waned over generations, forcing them to abandon their original craft in favor of insect manipulation through Crest Worms. This shift marked a descent into darker practices tolerated only because they held the third seat of the Grail War. Their current head, Zouken Matou, achieved immortality by using Crest Worms to sustain his life indefinitely, not by grafting Phantasmal Beasts. His obsession with the Holy Grail led him to take in Sakura Matou (born a Tohsaka) as a magus heir and later use her as a vessel for the Lesser Grail. Kariya Matou was born a Matou, the younger brother of Byakuya Matou, and was never adopted as a Tohsaka. The family's methods involve immense suffering, turning their estate into a labyrinth of tunnels filled with parasitic Crest Worms designed to harvest spiritual energy through agony.

In Their Own Story

Deep beneath the manicured lawns of the Fuyuki countryside, the air grows thick and humid. Zouken watches from the shadows of his subterranean lair, his wooden staff tapping against stone floors slick with slime. Above ground, a boy practices summoning spirits that do not belong to him, unaware that his true master feeds on the pain radiating from every failed spell. The insects hum in the darkness, waiting for the next offering.

The Matou hierarchy is strictly matriarchal in practice under Zouken’s absolute rule, though nominally patriarchal through adopted heirs like Kariya and Shinji. Their primary goal remains unchanging: to utilize the Holy Grail to reach the Root of All Magic, regardless of the cost to human morality or their own souls. Unlike other magi who seek knowledge for advancement, they view sacrifice as a necessary fuel for power. Influence on the plot is profound, particularly in Heaven's Feel routes where their corruption of Sakura drives the central conflict. They serve as the dark counterweight to the Tohsaka family’s light-based magecraft and the Emiya line’s heroism. Within broader magical society, they are viewed with suspicion by the Clock Tower due to their use of forbidden Beast magi techniques which blur the line between magecraft and curse. Ultimately, the organization functions less as a traditional clan and more as a cult centered around Zouken’s will. Their downfall signifies the end of an era for Fuyuki’s magical history, leaving the Grail War without one of its original pillars.
