The victor is granted access to the vessel's power, allowing them to rewrite reality according to their deepest wish. However, the artifact became corrupted during an earlier iteration of the Holy Grail War. An entity known as Angra Mainyu, representing all the sins and curses of humanity, was summoned into the vessel itself. This contamination means that any wish granted by the Greater Grail in its current state is twisted to cause destruction rather than salvation. The true nature of this corruption remains hidden until the Fifth Holy Grail War brings it to light. Throughout the narrative, the Grail acts as both a prize and a curse.
