The corruption stems from the absorption of Angra Mainyu into the Grail during the Third Holy Grail War, not from a wish made in the First War. The Grail was created by the Einzbern, Makiri (Matou), and Tohsaka families—the Mage's Association had no hand in its construction. When Angra Mainyu was summoned as a Servant in the Third War and subsequently defeated, it was absorbed into the Grail, tainting the vessel with its nature as 'All the World's Evils.'

Zouken Matou discovered this corruption during the Third Holy Grail War and later exploited it rather than creating it. In the Fourth War, Irisviel von Einzbern served as the vessel for the Grail, while in the Fifth War, her daughter Illya took that role. The 'mud' that spills from the corrupted Grail is a physical manifestation of Angra Mainyu's accumulated negativity, capable of dissolving matter, corrupting Servants, and twisting the minds of those who touch it.

The corruption becomes fully active during the Fourth Holy Grail War when Kirei Kotomine summons the vessel. Instead of granting a wish, the Grail releases a torrent of black mud that nearly destroys Fuyuki City.
